Summer at the Library!

We can tell that summer is here! The activity at the library has increased significantly. Kids are coming in to hang out, play games, and use the computers!

Last Monday, we had an end-of-school year party for the pre-teens and teens that went over really well. We had 20 kids that came for zombie tag, a zombie craft, snacks and a movie. This also kicked off our new pre-teen/teen library group. We have established a teen book club and teen advisory group to help us develop programs and more at the library. They plan to meet once a month on the second Friday of the month through the summer. General youth group is at 2:30 pm, and Book Club is at 4:00 pm. Kids can come to one or the other, or both!

We also have activities and craft days on alternating Mondays. Monday June 12th will be a craft day, and we will make a Father's Day craft that kids can give to their dad!

The next Monday will be a game/activity day, with various games or activities planned.

We will also have Friday Movies every other week, except the last week of June, since there are 5 Fridays in June. The next movie day will be June 16th. Movies will be the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month.

We're also gearing up for our annual summer reading program that starts in July. This year's theme is "Build a Better World".  Summer reading/story hour will be every Wednesday for 2-3 yr olds and 4-6 year old, and every Thursday for 1st grade-4th grade and pre-teen/teens.  Summer reading program starts on Wednesday, July 5th and continues until the end of July.

Wednesday groups  - 10:00 am  - 2-3 year olds for 1/2 hour.
                                  11:00 am - 4-6 year olds for 1 hour

Thursday groups:     -  1:30 pm - 1st - 4th graders
                                   2:30 pm - Pre-teen/teens - 5th grade and up.

The only change to this schedule will be on July 19th - we will have the Grout Museum at 10:00 am that day, so summer reading groups for that day will shift down to 11:30 for 2-3 year olds, and 12:00 for the 4-6 year olds. So come to the Grout Museum program and stay for story hour!

You can find our Google calendar with the full schedule at https://calendar.google.com/calendar/embed?src=v0kb64vf1d69suihhq7kkgvqv8%40group.calendar.google.com&ctz=America/Chicago

Another fun thing we are doing this year is a youth scavenger hunt that starts on July 14th. We are still planning this, so more information will be coming soon.

For summer reading this year, we have some great prizes! We have 2 Kindles to give away! Kids can earn tickets to be put into a drawing for a Kindle, or they can win one by reading the most minutes. Things that kids can do to earn tickets - come to programs at the library, read at the library, complete the scavenger hunt, and more. We'll have more information on all the ways to win, and other prizes kids can win, in the coming weeks.

Be Our Guest!

Welcome to the new Sloan Public Library blog!

We are restarting our blog with all new content. We will be posting library news about every month, but a new and exciting thing we will offer is guest authoring. We will let patrons post their book and movie reviews on the blog, reading suggestions, and other library-related information.

If you would like to be a guest author to give a book or movie review, just email us at slolib@longlines.com with the email address you would like to use for your log in, and we will get you set up. Reviews will appear in the blog, and we will periodically share a link to the blog on Facebook.

In other news, we are already planning our summer programs and should have our schedules out in April. We will have arts/crafts days, game days, movie days and of course, our summer reading program in July. We will also have a small Lego Mindstorms programming class starting in June.

On April 17th, we will have a meeting with the local preteens/teens to get their input on services and programs specifically aimed at their age group. We will be starting a teen book club, and a few other things based on survey responses, and suggestions from our local teens. Meeting will be at 3:00 pm. Kids don't have school that day. We will have snacks for everyone who attends.

Summer reading will be a little different this year as well. We have purchased 2 Kindles to give away. One to the child who reads the most minutes, and one we will have a drawing for. There will be ways everyone can earn tickets for a chance to win the 2nd Kindle. Ways kids can earn tickets are: coming to the summer reading program every week, attending another program, reading in the library for a set amount of time, and for certain reading goals reached.

We will post our summer activity schedule soon and we will again be sending it out with kids from school.

We will post other programs in future blogs. Please let us know if you would be interested in doing book reviews and/or movie reviews! All it takes is sending us your email address and we will add you. You will then receive an email invitation. Just follow the instructions and you can add your review!
